Star Show

Last Thursday we followed our granddaughter's suggestion and visited a nearby theatre to watch The Guardian of the Star - a production of The Melbourne GangShow - CLICK.

The theatre - The Besen Centre - CLICK - promised the best quality, artists delivered :)

Artists...
After entering the theatre foyer we realised that we are in the midst of Australian Scouts. Most of people around, young and old, were wearing either a scout scarf or some other scout insignia.

Before the show... I had to admit that I was bit worried... Melbourne Gang - I felt a promise of a very loud, aggressive music, sloppy behaviour, maybe some vulgarity, although presence of Scouts neutralised the last objection.

Title - The Guardian of the Star - promised some obscure legend.

The show started and our hearts and objections melted.
Pleasant music, great singing - both - choral and solo and wonderful choreography. Quite frequently we watch ballet performances and here, there was no dance but perfect coordination of many people on the stage.
In the background - impressive decorations.

Our rating 10 out of 10!

We just wondered that this performance was not advertised outside the close knit Scouts Community - great loss for many Melbournians.

Now we will keep our eyes and ears wide open.

The final scene of the performance - HERE - warning - sometimes preceded by a short ad.

Anniversary

Me and my wife reached a milestone - 60 years of marriage.
Somebody advised me to contact my local Member of Parliament as they can organise greetings from Australian officials.
I contacted the office of our local M.P. - Carina Garland - Labor.
They confirmed - yes, we can do it. Actually, for 60th anniversary you will receive greetings from the King.

The date came, we received.... nothing.
I queried the office... they replied that it looks I do not understand the process...
Well,  I understand that if someone declares something to be delivered on 10th of June then it should be delivered on 10th of June - period.

So I turned to AI for help.
I asked ChatGPT to write a sonnet on 60th anniversary of marriage of Australian subjects with Polish roots and here we are:

A Royal Sonnet on a Diamond Anniversary

From throne to distant shore I send my grace,
To hearts entwined through sixty steadfast years—
A union firm, time could not displace,
Nor dim with toil, nor wet with sorrow's tears.
In golden sun beneath the southern skies,
Your love took root on Austral soil anew,
Yet Polish echoes in your voices rise,
A harmony of lands and hearts held true.

O faithful pair, your story speaks to all—
Of journeys made, of cultures woven tight,
Of vows sustained through every rise and fall,
A beacon burning ever bold and bright.
As King, I raise my glass and humbly say:
God bless your love this diamond wedding day.

***

And what about Wurundjeri People, the original owners of this land?

A Wurundjeri Blessing: A Sonnet for Sixty Years

Upon this land where Bunjil spreads his wings,
We see your path beneath the eucalypt—
Two souls who came with hopes and humble things,
And with your love, this ancient soil equipped.
You brought from Poland dreams the winds had stirred,
And wove them through the gum and wattle gold;
Your laughter joined the magpie’s morning word,
Your story in our story now is told.

For sixty years, your bond has stood like stone,
As rivers carve the earth but do not break;
Together, through each joy and trial grown—
A tree whose roots no storm could ever shake.

Thank You!

P.S. Week after the Anniversary a postman brought a big load of greetings including this one...

Notre Dame

Last week I received a great proposal - our granddaughter Gracie had day free and she wished to spend it with Dziadzia.
Excellent!
Jump on the tram...

And watch where it will bring you....

What is this?
Let's go inside (Immigration Museum).
At the information desk we received a histopad - ryve smart device which allowed us to see what happened in and around Notre Dame Cathedral starting from the beginning in year 1161 to the tragic fire in 2018 and then a restoration which ended few weeks ago.

There were also large pictures on the walls...

---

---

---

We had great one and half hour of exploration.
At the end the Cathedral looked like New...

And in the street, under our feet - this we cannot restore we have to wait for the Nature...

And above our heads.... buildings, some of them already swollen...

Great time :)

Be Be

My first words this (and previous) morning were - brrrr, brrrr - so cold.
In our 42 years of life in Australia we never before switched on heating in February.

Why Be Be or double B?
Memory from 70 years ago - BB = Brigitte Bardot - CLICK.
I lived in a communist Poland and I am not sure when I saw BB in a movie but she was present in the papers and movie newsreels.
I was also aware of two other BBs - very popular German writer Bertold Brecht and not so popular Hungarian composer Bela Bartok.

Those memories revived at the end of 2023 when I got a message from Melbourne Symphony Orchestra about a concert - pianist Berta Brozgul will perform Bela Bartok's piano concerto No 3.
Unfortunately I could not attend this performance but I remember the name.

And here it came - Brunswick Beethoven Festival - Sofia Kirsanova - violin and Berta Brozgul - piano will play violin sonatas by L. Janacek and L. van Beethoven.

In last 3 months I experienced a serious health deterioration so I could not plan ahead any travel to the city in evening hours.
On Tuesday (18/2) I had an early dinner and at 6:30 pm decided that I am able to GO!

Concert took place in Brunswick Uniting Church. I arrived over half an hour before the performance, the church was closed, few people sheltered from cold wind in door niches.
- I am from Latvia - one lady introduced herself - because the violinist is Latvian. I introduced myself as Polish and to my surprise I got reinforcement of one lady.
There was one more lady around and she introduced herself as Australian - odd.

Eventually we were allowed to enter the church, there were around 150 people, my guess is there were no more than 5 people under 50 years of age.

The concert began...
I am not qualified to evaluate the performance although I was more moved by L. Janacek Sonata.

As for Kreutzer sonata I have another story...
Famous Russian writer - Leo Tolstoy - wrote a novella - Kreutzer Sonata.
This is a story about a man who killed his wife because he suspected her of marital infidelity with her music teacher and the inspiration to betrayal was - Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata.
There is L. Tolstoy's opinion:
"They say that music stirs the soul. Stupidity! A lie! It acts, it acts frightfully (I speak for myself), but not in an ennobling way. It acts neither in an ennobling nor a debasing way, but in an irritating way. How shall I say it? Music makes me forget my real situation. It transports me into a state which is not my own. Under the influence of music I really seem to feel what I do not feel, to understand what I do not understand, to have powers which I cannot have. Music seems to me to act like yawning or laughter; I have no desire to sleep, but I yawn when I see others yawn; with no reason to laugh, I laugh when I hear others laugh. And music transports me immediately into the condition of soul in which he who wrote the music found himself at that time. I become confounded with his soul, and with him I pass from one condition to another. But why that? I know nothing about it? But he who wrote Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ knew well why he found himself in a certain condition. That condition led him to certain actions, and for that reason to him had a meaning, but to me none, none whatever.
And that is why music provokes an excitement which it does not bring to a conclusion.
For instance, a military march is played; the soldier passes to the sound of this march, and the music is finished. A dance is played; I have finished dancing, and the music is finished. A mass is sung; I receive the sacrament, and again the music is finished.
But any other music provokes an excitement, and this excitement is not accompanied by the thing that needs properly to be done, and that is why music is so dangerous, and sometimes acts so frightfully.
"
Copied from Project Guttenberg (guttenberg.com).

I had this words in mind listening to the concert performance probably therefore I found it... short of madness :(
Here is a link to a performance with a bit of madness - CLICK - no wonder - the violinist is Moldavian, the pianist - Turkish.

One interesting point - here is the text of original dedication: "Sonata mulattica composta per il mulatto Brischdauer [Bridgetower], gran pazzo e compositore mulattico" (Mulatto Sonata composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, great madman mulatto composer).
George Bridgetower - look HERE - musician of Polish descent, born in Biała Podlaska...
Actually Biała means in Polish - White.
Isn't it mad?

And one more quote from L. Tolstoy novella - something written 135 years ago but still valid: The absence of the rights of woman does not consist in the fact that she has not the right to vote, or the right to sit on the bench, but in the fact that in her affectional relations she is not the equal of man, she has not the right to abstain, to choose instead of being chosen. You say that that would be abnormal. Very well! But then do not let man enjoy these rights, while his companion is deprived of them, and finds herself obliged to make use of the coquetry by which she governs, so that the result is that man chooses ‘formally,’ whereas really it is woman who chooses. As soon as she is in possession of her means, she abuses them, and acquires a terrible supremacy.”
“But where do you see this exceptional power?”

“Where? Why, everywhere, in everything. Go see the stores in the large cities. There are millions there, millions. It is impossible to estimate the enormous quantity of labor that is expended there. In nine-tenths of these stores is there anything whatever for the use of men? All the luxury of life is demanded and sustained by woman. Count the factories; the greater part of them are engaged in making feminine ornaments. Millions of men, generations of slaves, die toiling like convicts simply to satisfy the whims of our companions".

XPray

I thought I could tick off this year's Christmas, but last Sunday a new element was added.

The weather was beautiful, clear skies, sun but only to keep the mood up, temperature 24C.
No wonder I went for a walk shortly after returning from Sunday mass.
The shortest of my home-based walking routes, a little over half an hour's walk.

I have walked this route many times and my attention was drawn several times to the singing coming from one of the apartments.
Few weeks ago  I heard a very loud, beautiful singing. A female voice, maybe even two. It sounded somehow natural, not like from the radio or TV. There was no one in front of the door at that time.
Usually an elderly man often sat on a chair in front of the door, sometimes a younger woman brought him something to drink. I came to the conclusion that it was probably the daughter living with her father who needed care.
As is the case here in the neighborhood, we always waved our hands at each other in a friendly manner.

Last Sunday both tenants were at the door, we waved to each other and I deliberately slowed down to have a chance to ask about the songs.
It worked, the lady approached me, I noticed that she was quite handsome, I asked about the songs.
- Oh yes, we must have been singing psalms.
In turn, she asked about my health and of course I mentioned the hospital visit.

She thought for a moment... and can I pray for you?
It somehow suited both the weather and the Sunday mood, I agreed with a smile.
The lady put her hand on my shoulder, opened her eyes wider and so wide and began...
"God, who brought this man into this world, who cared for his existence in the mother's womb, who... ... do not let him lose his strength and health just now..."

I closed my eyes - an extremely strong, clear voice. In addition, a beautiful English accent, and strong words spoken in a very commanding way.
This must be heard by SOMEONE - I thought.

I noticed the hand resting on my shoulder.
I felt that it was a friendly hand, but I did not feel the flow of energy.
I will mention here that in our church there is one parishioner who sometimes touches me on the back in a friendly way and I feel the warmth flowing from his hand to me.
Our youngest granddaughter can do this too.

The lady finished her prayer, took her hand off my shoulder, I noticed that I had big tears in my eyes. I thanked her and went home breathing deeply.

And in the evening a guest came to us for dinner - our parish priest.
Very nice, we talked in a friendly way, he reminded us that the parish can help us in many practical situations.

And so the visit ended and I had a question:
- why didn't the priest offer me a blessing?

This is a very common behavior when meeting a sick person.
The priest knows that my attitude to faith is very skeptical, he knows that I do not receive communion, but this situation was specific.

So -  maybe the priest felt that someone had already prayed for me that day?

And was this lady praying to the same God?

XHosp

Saturday, 28/12 - noon - I'm home :)

So what? Everybody is.

Few words of explanation...

At the beginning of December I was feeling a considerable fatigue, which wouldn't go away. Even taking it for a walk didn't help.

Then next step came - I started feeling out of breath.
As a result, I didn't sleep the night before Christmas Eve because I had to strain really hard with every breath.
I called "Nurse-on-Call" and she told me to contact my family doctor immediately (there was always an ambulance in the back-up, but I preferred to check simpler options).

The doctor saw me in half an hour, listened to my lungs, categorically recommended not to move from the chair and called an ambulance.
Before the ambulance arrived I managed to call my wife to prepare a bag with the necessary things for me.
The ambulance was kind enough to pull up to our house (300m away) and let me go home to say goodbye to my wife and collect my things. However, they definitely did not want to drive our car home.

In the hospital they performed number of tests and decided to keep me for few days in the cardiology department. In this situation, the family spent Christmas Eve without me, but they joined me and we sang few carols together.

In the cardiology department it was like this...

I got a single room, I noticed that more than half of the rooms were empty.
Diagnosis - water in the lungs, cause - heart failure.

Action - tablets to drink water, limit fluid consumption to 1.5 liters a day - for me this is rather normal, although recently I may have been drinking a bit more.

If this works, they will let me go home with a recommendation to see a cardiologist, whom they will inform about my case.

It worked - I got rid of a lot of water, which somehow insidiously gathered in me - although I noticed that my feet were swelling, I thought I would check it out after the holidays. I did not realize that at the same time I was gaining a lot of weight - now in two days I have lost 5.5 kg and I am back to normal
Here is a recommendation - weigh yourself every day and write down the result.

I am attaching a few hospital photos...

Nutrition - the portions were tiny, but it was enough for me.
Below - yesterday's dinner...

It was quite tasty, although the vegetables were a bit overcooked and of course everything was not very salty (but the goulash was seasoned quite well).

A portion of medicine - I took the pink ones regularly, the black ones were a multivitamin, they added the white ones - for dehydration.

On the Christmas Day I was visited by children and grandchildren,  they even brought me a Christmas cracker...

I was probably most moving around patient, I discovered a small asylum in the open air.

Unfortunately the air was not very nourishing, probably there was an air conditioning outlet nearby. Temperatures were variable - the first day of Christmas - 33C, the second - 36C, Friday - 18C.

There was a bookshelf..

But I brought some reading material with me - an exceptionally well-chosen reading material - entering the profession of a medical specialist in Australia. Maybe it was this reading that brought out the wolf from the forest?

Saturday, around 11, my wife picked me up from the hospital and we went to the supermarket to buy some fruit - I can now walk without getting out of breath.

I thank all the readers of this blog for your concern and kind words.
I wish you... good HEALTH - for the whole New Year.

Powrót do Edenu

Powrot do edenuPowrot do Edenu by Agnieszka Burton
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A jakie były te negatywne?
Takie same...

Barefoot on the grass

One day, I left home, walked to the park and... took off my shoes...

I felt Mother Earth under my feet.

Because it all started with Mother.
Even at preschool age, she encouraged me to walk barefoot in the grass behind the house in the mornings, in the dew.
I was not very eager to do it, anyway for the first 11 years of my life I never put on rubber shoes, only leather.

It was 1952, the Olympic year, and on that occasion I watched newsreels of sports competitions in the cinema. I paid special attention to the US athletes - in the newspapers and radio news (Communist Poland) I read/heard about their decadent lifestyle and here - athletes, not worse than the Soviet ones.
Especially basketball players - all in stylish sneakers.
And then domestically produced sneakers appeared in stores.
When I mentioned to Mother that I would like to have some, she grabbed her head in despair - it's murder - rubber, the foot doesn't breathe.
And so, without breathing - for 72 years.

Last Sunday I overheard on youtube a health program that my wife regularly listens to, and there - the electrostatics of the human body.
I didn't need more - I hurried to a nearby park.

Of course, I moved away from the paths sprinkled with sharp gravel and looked around.
Firstly under my feet... on a golf course...

On a cricket field...

Eventually I walked mostly on medium height grass on the oval,
Then I looked up...
Trees intertwined in an embrace...

There is no aggression, so it is not wrestling.
Perhaps it illustrates the history of a relationship... love, rivalry for influence in the family, and in the end - staying in the hug just for survival.

Anyway - I felt hungry. I glanced at the trees one last time...

Looks like we will have broccoli as a vegetable for dinner this night.

By the Way - my favourable place for barefoot walks is an oval in nearby Wattle Park.
On Saturdays it is occupied by rightful owners - cricketers...

Their field is marked with plastic bowls - red and blue on an image above.
It leaves a lot od space for me... and one risk.
In cricket the highest score (6 pts) is awarded when a batter sends a ball behind a line.
Luckily they did not hit me :))))

P.S. Here are 2 randomly found articles about benefits of barefoot walking

500 words

 Wordle...

I learned about this game from my son during my hospital stay - early 2023.

After a few random games and losses, I thought about the method.

I was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's story - The Gold Bug - in which treasure hunters have to decipher an encrypted document. They come up with the idea to base it on the statistics of the frequency of letters in English words.
I found information that the top letters used in the English language are E, T, A, I, N, O, S.

I decided to start with the word P-R-I-C-E.

The New York Times advised that a better word would be S-T-A-L-E, but the English word still smelled somehow stale to me, I preferred to know the price.

I will explain the rules of the game -
You have to guess a 5-letter word in 6 attempts.

After each attempt, NYT marks in black the letters that do not appear in the target word, in yellow the letters that appear but in a different position, and in green - the letters that appear in the given position.
In the given example, the situation was dramatic, two attempts and not a single letter.
After three words I could see that I was doing badly, it put me in a sour mood - I became jazzy - and that was the point.

Statisctics - 105 games, 80% wins, longest winning streak - 26.

3rd January 2024 - simple like one-two-three..

Another friendly case...
The first 3 words gave me only two vowels. Fortunately, not many consonants fit into them, so I managed to find a BUDDY.

Statistics informed me that it was my 500th game...

So I've been playing every day since the beginning of February last year.
It's hard to treat it as a time-filler, an average game takes me about 3 minutes.
I imposed strict rules on myself - I don't try to find answers on the internet, I play without breaks until I succeed or loose.

The longest winning streak - 287 - that's over 9 months.
I achieved that at the end of May, 94% wins, 14 games short of 95% and then a streak of 4 losses came.

Supposedly I still have 94% wins, but that's a big rounding off, now I'm about 50 wins short of 95%.

And today - July 30... 500 won games :)

Super!!

Family Sport

Last Friday in Melbourne leading daily paper Herald Sun one could notice this...

===

Rugby on water - it looks like this..

In a small pool, two 5-person teams fight without hesitation for the ball. The goal is to throw it into a basket similar to a basketball. In my opinion, it is not rugby, but rather basketball in kayaks, although sometimes it is fierce - see HERE.

What possessed me to write about this?

This amazing duo - our daughter-in-law and granddaughter - visited us yesterday.

This young company is clearly ageing me, so I'll go back 22 years.

Year 2002 - Sarah - our daughter-in-law - qualified to the Australian team for the Canoe-Polo World Championships in Essen - Germany.

It was for this occasion that I bought this T-shirt - it survived these 22 years better than I did.
The Australians won the bronze medal - Germany won, Poland - 17th place.

That same year I also had the opportunity to try this sport.
The occasion was our daughter's wedding - the daughter-in-law organised a match - Milewski Family vs. The Rest of the World.
The family team consisted of the Bride and Groom, Daughter-in-Law and Son and... me.
As expected, after a few minutes I fell into the water.
Here I will explain that kayaks are equipped with a protective skirt, so after capsizing, water does not flow into the kayak and the competitor can easily do an underwater somersault - CLICK.
Well, maybe not so easily - I couldn't twist out, which complicated matters a bit because to get out of the kayak underwater you had to unfasten the protective skirt and crawl out of the kayak upside down.
Anyway, I survived, I was replaced by a reserve player and I could calmly watch the rest of the game. The Rest of the World (Monash University team) won 7:2.

2 years later our daughter-in-law gave birth to a child, then three more and I thought the whole thing would remain in the realm of memories.
But no, last year Sarah felt the call of youth and resumed training, her daughter Matylda joined her. This year both qualified for the Australian national team for the world championships - the mother in the senior team, the daughter in the junior team.
In October they will go to the championships in Dequing - China - CLICK.

P.S.
Update - World Championships are over - 10 days of hard time - 9 hours of competition for 8 days,
Australian Women Team (Sarah) ended in 14th position,
Australian Women U21 Team (Matilda) in 7th position.
Here is an update of a T-shirt...

Life in 3G

My friend from the church declared that his current priorities are - 3G - God, Girls and Golf.
My contact with golf is none, girls... from the distance.
Grumbling and Grave look much closer, still today I realised that we have a beautiful golf course in the park 1 kilometre from the house.

We've had beautiful, sunny days lately. A few times a week, while driving to a nearby market in the morning, I pass this field and admire the beautiful grass, wonderfully rolling hills, all behind a light curtain of fog illuminated by the rising sun.

Unfortunately, I cannot document it with photos because there is no place to park a car.
I tried in the afternoon from the other side.
I drove car to the nearby park and noticed that somebody was watching me...

I thought that these nice creatures will also monitor my car and in good spirit walked towards the golf course. Unfortunately the park is on the hill, the golf course goes down so it was difficult to take a good photo, so we have what we have...

---

---

Walking track is rather short, access to the golf course is limited so I moved back to the park, under the trees.
Bang!
Something hit me strongly in the shoulder.
Alarm!!! They are playing golf outside the course!
I looked down for a golf ball.... I found this....

The pine of the tree under which I walked...

I felt good emotions,
The NATURE gave me a friendly nudge - I am here, near you - enjoy.

Unfinished Woman

Unfinished Woman: A MemoirUnfinished Woman: A Memoir by Robyn Davidson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Strange and charming book, although difficult to say what it is about.
The solid ground should be autobiographical facts but they are not.
Robyn starts with spelling out doubts about credibility of our memory and memory of people who knew or met her.
Even the bare facts which could be verified, are not quite clear.
Of course I was curious what is her memory of time spent in London with Salman Rushdie. From other sources I know that she was his partner in London, I found a quite clear reference to Robyn in Satanic Verses.
In this case, Robyn in her book, makes a very sensible jink - she just mentions that she fell in love with a wonderful man and they spent 2 years together.
Also Robyn's Wikipedia page is extremely dry.
We have to rely on the book and I found it quite rewarding. Difficult to explain, I just felt charmed.

Robots at ease

Few days ago unstoppable Google notified me that Agnieszka Pilat visited Melbourne with three robots to demonstrate their painting capabilities.

If painting then National Gallery of Victoria - NGV.
I started Googling: "NGV pilate..." - Google suggested - NGV pilates.

It was enough to distract me, so I followed this lead - results:
- pilates class (gymnastic exercises) on the roof of the gallery,
- Contrology - a sculpture of a board with legs and a fin performing Pilates exercises (note - this was the name used by Joseph Pilates when he invented his exercise technique.)
- Dream of Pilate's wife - engraving from 1874

STOP!
Contrology - time to take control of Google, I enquired "Agnieszka Pilat NGV".
Got her!

Source: Instagram.

Last Sunday, Melbournians could see the robots in action and watch in person an interview with Ms. Agnieszka.

3 o'clock, the very center of the city, what a crowd, traffic, chaos, confusion.
In front of the railway station, a homeless woman is sleeping carelessly on the ground.
A few steps further and I'm right in the middle of this crowd.
I must admit that it was a bit too much for me, I had maybe 150m to go, but after few steps I had had enough.

A calming interlude along the way, a bridge over the Yarra River...

In front of the gallery, a hand with a thumb pointing up encouraged me...

There was also a lot of traffic inside the gallery, free admission, various exhibitions, including those for children.

Only the sculptures of two proletarians brought some peace - only one could fit into the lens...

The interview with Mrs. Agnieszka took place in a huge hall, there were several rows of chairs at the front, then randomly placed chairs, stools, a bar counter, slight confusion.

I sat down in the second row of chairs, a slim blonde was sitting right in front of me, I also noticed yellow shoes, the same ones as in the photo at the beginning of the post...

Czy pani Agnieszka (Ms. Agnieszka)? - I asked in Polish.

Quite a surprise, but Ms. Agnieszka greeted me nicely, we talked for a while in Polish, then switched to English so as not to isolate us from the surroundings.

After a while, a highly titled interviewer approached us, time for the stage...

Unfortunately, this was a disappointment for me.

Firstly, there was a lot of noise in the hall,  secondly - talking through microphones, there was a huge reverberation in the room, it was difficult for me to hear and understand it. The conversation was translated into sign language, I thought deaf people "heard" more.
Thirdly, and most importantly, this conversation did not make much sense to me :(

Here is some approximation of its content - CLICK.

I did not have a chance to talk to Mrs. Agnieszka anymore, so I moved to see the robots in action...

The robots did not paint, they just moved around two rooms connected by a passage with stairs. From this I concluded that they have sight, but I guess they could not hear, I spoke to them in Polish and English and there was no sign of reaction.

So here I will share the questions that bothered me:
- what activities robots are programmed to perform and what activities they perform on their own - if they do anything on their own at all.

Specifically - we turn on the robot and what?
Will it move at all? Why?
On what principle does it change the direction of movement, nod its head, stops, moves from room to room???
Why is it painting?

During the interview, Ms. Agnieszka mentioned that humanity should seriously consider what kind of relationship we want to have with robots, who will be the aristocracy of the future, will technology mature to the stage of creating a religion?

I felt humbled and went to the exit.

A fountain of flames bid me farewell...
